Road Tripping the 928- The journey

The whole point of a road trip is always the getting there. The destination is the goal but the journey is the experience. Especially if you are surrounded by technology from a bygone age of when Thatcher ruled the roost. We have eschewed some of the technology in favour of a bit of an upgrade in departments of in car entertainment and SatNav. This decision was in part made by one of the previous owners of the 928 and is one, that due to the non availability of the original Blaupunkt Toronto Sqr-46 even as a second hand unit, means we have its Bluetooth Grandchild and namesake sitting in the dashboard, the Blaupunkt Toronto BT420.

The one bit of the 928 which makes it unique is the big fat lump of an engine up front. Sure Porsche have in the intervening years honed and perfected units in the Cayenne and Panamera, but this engine was their first stab, and rather a good one it was. Wafting along at 130 kmh it is ticking over at 2900 rpm it returned 22 mpg until you start sitting in traffic and contemplating the scenery inching past the window at a rate seeming slower than the fuel gauge tending towards zero. then unhappily we start to slip into the 19 mpg range

The run down to the alpes is perfect 928 territory, long fats miles punctuated by stops here and there to top up with food and fuel with the last stretch hooning around hairpins up the mountain switchback systems to the destination up in the clouds. The 928 does both with ease, at home munching through the miles as it is squeeling through the passes...... and of course the tunnels. This must be accompanied by the dropping of windows and selecting of gears to close the resonance flap within the intake system at 3800 rpm and let rip the V8 howl.
